Biography
Sepoy Virander Kumar hailed from Mohna village in Faridabad district of Haryana. Raised with strong values of discipline, hard work and duty, and inspired by the soldiers of his region, he aspired from a young age to serve his nation. This led him to join the Indian Army, where he became a proud member of the 17 Jat Battalion of the Jat Regiment. Through rigorous training he developed the qualities of a true soldier — discipline, resilience and teamwork — upholding the regiment's rich traditions with unwavering dedication. In 1999, during the Kargil War, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and inducted into the strategically crucial Mushkoh Valley. Point 4875, dominating a 30-kilometre stretch of the National Highway and linked to Tiger Hill, became a critical objective. The operation commenced on 4 July 1999, with the 17 Jat Battalion tasked to capture the Whale Back and Pimple I features from the south. During the fierce assault, Sepoy Virander Kumar sustained critical injuries. Fighting valiantly to the very end, he laid down his life in the line of duty on 6 July 1999.
