Biography

Paviter Kumar Sheoran hailed from Milakpur village in the Narnaud tehsil of Hisar district, Haryana. The son of army veteran Kitab Singh Sheoran, who had served with 7 Cavalry of the Armoured Corps, he aspired to wear the uniform from his earliest days. After completing his schooling, he joined the Army in 1996 at the age of eighteen and was recruited into the 8 Jat Battalion of the Jat Regiment. During the 1999 Kargil War, his battalion was deployed along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir as part of Operation Vijay under the 28 Infantry Division. Sepoy Paviter Kumar was part of a team assigned to dominate a 17,000-foot feature over extremely rugged terrain close to the LoC. On 8 July 1999, his team scaled a steep cliff using specialised mountaineering equipment, only to be met by machine gun, mortar and artillery fire. Despite the intense onslaught, the platoon pressed on and, after a fierce battle, captured the enemy post. That night the enemy counterattacked under cover of darkness and fog with heavy artillery bombardment. A shell landed near Sepoy Paviter Kumar, and the explosion claimed his life along with three of his comrades. He displayed gallantry and devotion to duty of a very high order and made the supreme sacrifice.
