Biography

Lance Naik Parsaram Jat hailed from Nagaur district of Rajasthan and was born on 01 January 1962 to Shri Hardina Ram and Smt Gogi Devi. He studied at a Government school in Nagaur and was a keen sportsman from childhood, excelling in various sports and especially in wrestling during his school days. Alongside sports, he nursed a strong desire to serve in the Armed Forces and wear the Indian Army uniform. He fulfilled that ambition on 04 October 1980, when he joined the Army and was recruited into 3 Grenadiers of the Grenadiers Regiment, a unit renowned for its fearless soldiers and numerous battle honours. By 1995 Lance Naik Parsaram had put in about fifteen years of service, having served with his unit in various operational areas under challenging conditions, and had grown into a committed, battle-hardened soldier. During that year his unit was deployed in Kupwara district of Jammu & Kashmir for counter-insurgency operations along the Line of Control, an area highly prone to infiltration. Acting on intelligence about the presence of militants in the Wandrawal forest area, the unit launched a search-and-destroy operation on 10 August 1995, and Lance Naik Parsaram was part of the assault team tasked with neutralising the threat. On reaching the suspected area the troops came under heavy fire from militants hiding in thick foliage. Acting as scout, Lance Naik Parsaram signalled his comrades to take cover and identified a militant behind a boulder who was firing incessantly and endangering the team. Disregarding his own safety, he crawled over ten metres through a hail of bullets and killed the militant. Though gravely wounded when another militant opened fire, he continued to fire and killed the second attacker before succumbing to his injuries. For his conspicuous bravery, resoluteness and supreme sacrifice, Lance Naik Parsaram Jat was awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
