He enlisted in the Indian Army on 23 July 2003 at the age of nineteen and was posted to The Mahar Regiment. During his service he was deployed with the 1 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir. On 25 May 2015, Sepoy Dharma Ram was part of a patrol near village Kanjikul in the Kulgam district of Jammu & Kashmir when the team came under intense fire from militants concealed inside a house. Closing in on the hideout, he engaged the terrorists at close quarters and, despite being hit by two bullets, pressed on with his attack and eliminated a Lashkar-e-Taiba district commander before succumbing to his injuries. For his conspicuous bravery and supreme sacrifice, Sepoy Dharma Ram was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. A memorial in his honour stands in his native Taratara village.
