Biography

Sepoy Dharma Ram was born on 21 December 1983 in Taratara village of the Barmer district of Rajasthan. He enlisted in the Indian Army on 23 July 2003 at the age of nineteen and was posted to The Mahar Regiment. During his service he was deployed with the 1 Rashtriya Rifles for counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir. On 25 May 2015, Sepoy Dharma Ram was part of a patrol near village Kanjikul in the Kulgam district of Jammu & Kashmir when the team came under intense fire from militants concealed inside a house. Closing in on the hideout, he engaged the terrorists at close quarters and, despite being hit by two bullets, pressed on with his attack and eliminated a Lashkar-e-Taiba district commander before succumbing to his injuries. For his conspicuous bravery and supreme sacrifice, Sepoy Dharma Ram was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra. A memorial in his honour stands in his native Taratara village.
