Biography
Naib Subedar Mangej Singh hailed from Harnawa village in Parbatsar tehsil of Nagaur district and was born on 2 August 1958. He joined the Indian Army after his schooling and, after two decades of service, was promoted to Naib Subedar. On 6 June 1999, he was deployed in a patrol to establish a foothold at Point 5590 in the Turtuk sector and was assigned command of the medium machine gun detachment. When the patrol was 50 metres from its target, the enemy opened heavy automatic fire. He personally took charge of the medium machine gun and engaged the enemy from open terrain without cover. Hit by gunshot wounds to the chest and, later, the abdomen, and showing utter disregard to his personal safety, he continued firing until the patrol could extricate itself. For his gallantry he was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.
