Kanwar Pal Singh

Biography

Rifleman Kanwar Pal Singh hailed from Bangothari Kalan village in the Surajgarh tehsil of Jhunjhunu district, Rajasthan, and was born on 26 June 1972. After completing his school education, he joined the Army and was recruited into the 2 Rajputana Rifles battalion, an infantry regiment renowned for its brave soldiers and numerous battle honours. During the Kargil War in 1999, his battalion, as part of the operations to evict Pakistani intruders from Indian territory, was inducted into the Drass area on 4 June 1999. As the Army pressed its advance after the capture of Tololing and Point 5140, the Black Rock complex — also known as Three Pimples Ridge — became a key objective whose capture would pave the way for further gains and dominate the National Highway and Drass town. Ahead of the planned assault, extensive patrolling was carried out to assess enemy deployment. Rifleman Kanwar Pal Singh was made part of one such patrol on 26 June 1999. While undertaking the patrol, he was injured in enemy firing and soon succumbed to his wounds, laying down his life in the line of duty.
