Biography

Havildar Satyabir Singh Chauhan hailed from Basai Bhopal Singh village in Neemrana tehsil of Alwar district, Rajasthan, born on 15 August 1962. The son of army veteran Sardar Singh Chauhan, he was inspired to follow in his father's footsteps and wished to serve in the armed forces from an early age. After completing his early education, he joined the Army in 1982 at the age of twenty and was enrolled in the 2nd Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles, an infantry regiment renowned for its brave soldiers and numerous battle honours. In 1999 he was promoted to the rank of Havildar. During the Kargil War, his battalion, part of 81 Mountain Brigade, was inducted into the Dras sector on 4 June 1999 to evict Pakistani intruders who had occupied vacated Indian posts along the heights. As Indian forces fought to recapture key features such as Tololing, Point 5140 and the Three Pimples complex, Havildar Satyabir Singh took part in the fierce high-altitude operations. He laid down his life in the line of duty on 20 June 1999, fighting valiantly for his country.
